Exotic Treatments: The Spa Industry’s Version of “Stranger Things”

Are Snakes on your spa’s menu?

What about snails?

Trendy spa treatments are all the rage. While in some spas Snail Facials and Snake Massages are demanding high dollars and turning therapists into creature wranglers, we’re keeping things tried and true. But these exotic treatments do beg a question:

Is there fact behind the hype?

Basically, do they work? Well, in theory… If you are willing to let large escargot leave slimy trails on your face as they slither along, you will receive antioxidants and proteins in their wake. Want to have a bundle of various-sized snakes dumped on your back for a sensation piquing experience? You may just get some muscle kneading from the large ones. But we doubt if it would be deeply relaxing.

Ever heard of the Nightingale facial? The birds droppings are first treated with ultraviolet rays to kill bacteria and then ground to a powder and mixed with water which creates a paste. The mixture is said to prevent blemishes and even skin tone. Hmmm, it’s still bird droppings…

If you feel like trying something a bit outside of your comfort zone for the entertainment or experience value of it, we applaud you all the way! But, while these treatments have their theoretic benefits and are perfectly well and good for the individuals who like that kind of experience, there are a few key reasons we don’t offer them.

  1. We don’t have the ability to humanely see to the needs of snakes or snails here.
  2. The well-researched products we use are tested and proven safe and effective.
  3. It’s your therapist’s education, talent and ability that creates a relaxing, effective and custom designed treatment. Not random living creatures.
  4. Natural ingredients don’t have to be shocking to work.
  5. We feel that each client should be at ease and deeply relaxed in all our services. That means a certain amount of predictability.

If you want to try new modalities, we put together things like The Sampler Massage. Need to reignite your excitement for your skincare routine? Talk to you esthetician about options to rev things up.
